The England Smoking Ban came into force on the 1st July 2007!
From the 1st July 2007, the England Smoking Ban took effect and smoking in public places has been banned! Smoking is no longer permitted in all enclosed public spaces, such as restaurants, night clubs, public transport, work places, and work cars or vans used by more than one person. Penalties of £50 will be handed out to anyone breaking the smoking ban, and you could also be prosecuted as breaking the ban will be a criminal offence.
The ban doesn't just affect smokers! The effects of the ban are far reaching, and businesses now have a duty to protect both employees and members of the public from cigarette smoke. Business owners who allow people to smoke inside their premises can be hit with large fines, and it is now mandatory to display the relevant No Smoking Signs at points around their buildings.
